Summer is coming to a close and most of us have swapped vacations for staycations this year or drastically changed the way we’ve traveled. One city I’ve always enjoyed visiting is Las Vegas. I can throw some money at a Blackjack or Craps table, but lately my biggest bets have been on where to put my money to grow my business. And I know I’m not the only one.
A recent article in the Wall Street Journal talks about how companies are reconsidering and condensing their marketing budgets to meet their needs and balance their checkbooks. I’ve worked with companies with large and small marketing teams and I believe the biggest determinants of a successful marketing team are:
1. Who is on your team, not how many. I believe that the strengths, abilities and openness to learn and evolve matter more than numbers. I’ve seen successful small teams and weak large teams (and everywhere in between). Find the right people that can help move the needle forward.
2. A powerful leader. We’ve all heard it, there are endless quotes about leaders versus bosses. The reason why it is shared on your LinkedIn feed so often is because it’s true. Success starts at the top.
3. Innovative and forward-looking thinking. Especially during an economic recession and a major crisis like COVID, many people slash their marketing budget. However, your competitors aren’t. In fact, the smart leaders ramp up their branding and communication efforts and set themselves up for success down the line. You just need a solid plan and the right recipe for success. This pandemic will end, where will your business be?
It’s time to go all in on marketing, communications and public relations. Just make a smart bet.
